This Hope chest was severely burned after the house collapsed around it during the 2008 Tea Fire in Santa Barbara. Miraculously, the precious lace fabric that was stored inside was not damaged. The chest was resurrected by stripping all the veneer and charred wood off the framework, then re-gluing the carcass back together. We recreating the decorative veneering pattern using old pictures as a guide then glued the new veneer and inlay onto the reconstructed casework. The matching marquetry jewelry box was made from the leftover material from resurecting this chest from the ashes.
